Technopagan rituals


I was one long before I had a name for it.

For as long as I can remember, I've had a thing for tools.

Screwdrivers, pliers, lockpicks, doesn't matter. The more unusual the better.

Part of it is biological, I know that now. I've a mild case of Asperger's Syndrome, little rituals calm me.

But part of it is just the tool waiting to be used.

Not just any tool though. And not just on anything either.

For example, I am probably one of the seven living American adult males who has no interest in how a car works as long as it works. When I turned 16, my parents actually had to bug me about getting a driver's license. Cars actually run in the family, I've got an uncle who owned a garage for years, but I actually was never drawn to cars.

Hand tools on the other hand...

Put me in a room with them and I can practically hear them begging to be used.

I name my favorite machines. And I make a distinction between players, gadgets, gizmos, and tools. Don't ask, or I just might tell you why.

When I was a kid, other kids identified with Kirk or Spock. I identified with Scotty. There was your miracle worker.

I can't just sit on the couch or chair. I have to fiddle with something. When I am reading in the kitchen I'll build fruit towers in the fruitbowl. I can't just take notes, I have to draw.

So it should come as no surprise that one of my favorite calming rituals involves one of my tool pouches. I use the tools that don't come apart to disassemble the ones that do, arrange everything in a careful pattern, and then I put everything back together again. I may have tossed a couple of extra items in my tool pouch depending on the situation. I don't know why, but it always helps me center.
