A new balance

Just look at the sunshine

You know, a lot of things have been crazy the last couple of months. But this room is one of those things that has gone right, even if it is taking longer than I expected.

The solar tube is on the (roughly) east side of the house, the room is drenched in sunlight for almost the entire day, This morning I was in the sanctum before dawn, and the prism insets in the glass around the outside door were catching the early morning summer sun and throwing dozens of rainbows against the wall.

The wall is a bluish grey undercoat streaked with dark blue and reflective copper. The patterns on the walls change as the light moves. And the fan's shadow gives a constant feeling of movement.

Every sound is magnified in this small space. If I am quiet, I can hear the my heart beat just above the birdsong outside. I can hear my breathing, and I have this constant compulsion to clear my nose and sinuses.

It dawned on me this morning that more than anything else, this room honors the sun. Even without everything in place. I found myself wondering if there would be enough space under the altar table for a yoga mat and a small meditation stool so I could take the occasional break from time to time, strip down, and just let that wonderful sun flow all around me and through me.

I built my sun tower, my variation of the kiva, and I didn't even know it. It is like this sanctum of mine gathers sunlight and energy and focuses it.

Stars above and Earth below, I think I had help.

At least I can tell people I knew what I was talking about when I put copper on the walls.

I think about every office, every workroom I have ever had before, it has always been shut off, a fortress against the darkness. Even my living room has heavy drapes to spare my neighbors the sight of something they don't like.
