The land will be changed

This last year or so I've looked at land in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. My goal is to find a patch of land where I don't have to worry about the neighbors, but I can still keep things like water and power and internet.

Although the internet may have to be satellite...

All along there has been a little guilty voice in the back of my head. Sort of a "take only photos, leave only footprints" kind of thing. I've been obsessing with minimal impact on the land.

Well, about a month ago, it dawned on me. This is going to be my home. There isn't an animal on the planet that doesn't change it's home.

More importantly, some of the most sacred places I know happened BECAUSE someone changed the landscape and then dedicated their work and the place to the Divine.

If I build the way I want to, there is no way it's going to be minimal impact on the landscape.

The more I think about it, I am not sure it should be.

Afterwards, it will look good.

I'm still drawing on ideas, like the Spanish influenced courtyard in the center of the home surrounded by thick adobe walls. Something partially buried I think, and maybe even round doors. Celtic knotwork for decoration, and I like the idea of a natural house.

But no one likes to build enough bookshelves anymore.

I don't want a salt box.

I want something that looks like it grew out of the landscape.

I want a topiary Green Man near the front gate.

I want some trees. I really want some trees. More than a handful just planted in the yard.

I want a place that takes a while to walk across.

I want seclusion.

I want a home that bridges the worlds.

I want statues of Gods and Goddesses.

There is no way I can build that with "minimal impact." Such a place doesn't exist.

But it will.
