Magick in the modern worldIt isn't as far as you
think
As I write this, I have iTunes playing on my
computer.
That's a real wonder you know. My stepdad used to make his own mixtapes on reel-to-reel before the word mixtapes was invented. Anything that lets me combine Bach, Queen, Disney, The Beach Boys, Yes, Etta James, and Emerald Rose with just a few mouse clicks on the same session is beyond okay in my book. Technology is very much a part of who I am. Yes, I have a fireplace, but I also have central heat and a water heater. Guess which I use more? My sanctum where I write this during the day is lit with a solar tube, but at night I have a few electric bulbs here and there. And of course, MaKai here doesn't run on fermented tree sap, he demands electricity. I live alone except for the occasional company. I play a lot of music. I only have one TV, but I move it around a lot. I won't tell you how many VCRs I have though. I have cable and satellite. I may have hermit tendencies, but I still like to know what's going on. I name my computers and my favorite appliances, I believe this makes them run better. Yesterday I went to the True Value to pick up a few odds and ends of hardware, and I heard the tools calling my name. Well, one of my names anyway. There are some tools I am seldom separated from. I like a dishwasher, even if it isn't "green." I like my fridge even more. Even though I would prefer not to wear clothes, I still want them clean. What's the point of all this? If we have magic in the forests and the deserts, we have magic around us as well. Granted, some times it's not expressed particularly well (must not do rant on modern suburban architecture), but it's there. We're not just drawn to our dreams. Our milieu and our surroundings imprint us just as much as we imprint them. If magick lives only in the wilderness, then we owe it to ourselves to bring a little wilderness to the city. But it doesn't. It lives all around us. Numbers, patterns, colors, scents, noise. It's a wilderness all it's own. It's a power all it's own. It's a magick all it's own. We humans were born with a spark of the Divine. We spend our lives trying to pass that on. Sometimes we succeed.

Pagan philosopher, libertarian, and part-time trouble maker, NeoWayland looks at keeping truths alive despite a wash of nonsense. But don't be surprised when he's doing the "nekkid Pagan guy" thing.
