Not all witches are WiccansA short response to Mike Nichols article
at Witchvox
Mike Nichols has a piece up at Witchvox. I admire Mike and I have
used his website on sabbats in my suggested reading list
for newbies. But in this case, I think he is dead
wrong.
I'm not going to go into detail, other than to say that I know of people who called themselves witches decades before Gardner published his work, but also considered themselves Christians. They would no more think about calling on another god than Mike Nichols would think about unwilling blood sacrifice. There is a reason why the words have moved the way they have, the definitions work. Not all Wiccans are witches, and not all witches are Wiccans. The mere fact that I can say that without being contradicted is proof enough that the words do not mean the same thing.
