Pagans told that Christmas isn't theirs and they should move on

Inspiring LiveJournal entry that makes you think

I am laughing tonight.

I can just imagine the ruckus this caused. Heck, looking at nonfluffypagans, I can see some of the ruckus.

He's got a point though. This oneumpmanship of who owned which holiday first has got to stop.

I do have a couple of things I want to add.

The age of a faith doesn't matter. It could be something that someone put together last week, a thousand years ago, or three hundred years from now. Age isn't something that gives a faith validity or moral supremacy.

Hearing that someone is a Christian, a Pagan, a Buddhist or even an atheist doesn't tell me what kind of person they are, it only tells me what they are called.

Second, the practices of every faith change over time. I seriously doubt that any of the early Christians would recognize what passes as Christianity now. Just over a century ago, it was not unusual for some sermons to last hours. Likewise I expect I would be very confused if I had to decipher the rites of Iron Age Celts, much less if I had to participate. That doesn't mean that religious practices are less valid today, merely that they are different.

And that is the whole thing. When you come down to it, matters of faith are first and last a personal choice. It's between you and the Divine. How you choose to honor your beliefs is up to you.

The rest is just decoration.
