Occasionally I wandered in where I was not wanted and gave truthful answers.
Sometimes I even did it deliberately. A little disruption now can prevent disaster later.

Five words

Power with versus power over.

Starhawk is usually credited with that phrase but she borrowed it. It's one of those critical ideas so central to the practice of magick. And it's one of those ideas that is so central to an effective life.

It's deceptively simple.

First it means
recognizing what already exists. The structures, the energies, the people.

Second, it means
recognizing what you bring and the sacrifices you'll have to make.

Third, it means
setting a goal where change benefits everyone. Or at least most.

Fourth, it means
initiating change.

And fifth, it means
things and people are left better than when you found them.

Power with versus power over.

Not bad for five words.

It has to start with understanding. That means pay close attention to what is already there. You can't involve someone or some place "for their own good," they have to choose. It's why my version goes "allies not servants." If you bring force against choice, the change is only going to last as long as the force.

Yes, this might have political overtones. I am a part time troublemaker after all.

Your sacrifice is essential. You have to have "skin in the game" not only to establish your motives, but to inspire others to give too. Everyone involved should be a stakeholder.

Setting the goal means agreeing what the goal should be and the steps necessary. It should also mean deciding how success will be measured. Burning a few candles is not success. Positive change and reaching the goal is success.

Magick is initiating, celebrating, and directing change. Easy to say but it can be hard to do.

Finally there is the hardest part. Honesty. Did your change make people, places, and things better? Will it last? What are the benefits versus the costs?

Do you have to start over?

In a year and a day, will things be better than you found them?

Five words.

Power with versus power over.

Do you have the knowledge? Do you have the courage? Are you strong enough? Can you let others take the credit?

Power with versus power over.

May your choice be blessed.

EDITED : I should never write before my morning tea. Five words, not six.
